ez publish / technical manual / 4.x / installation / normal installation

Caution: This documentation is for eZ Publish legacy, from version 3.x to 5.x.

Normal installation

This part of the 4.x documentation is for eZ Publish 4.0, only reference section is common for all eZ Publish 4.x versions as well as eZ Publish 5.x "LegacyStack", please select the version you are using for the most up to date documentation!

The normal installation method is the most common and recommended way of deploying eZ Publish. It requires a system which already has the proper environment installed, most notably a web server and a database. The necessary requirements are explained in detail within the next section. A typical normal installation process consists of the following steps:

  • Setting up / creating a database
  • Downloading a packaged eZ Publish distribution
  • Unpacking the eZ Publish distribution
  • Initiating and going through the web based setup wizard

Once the web based setup wizard has completed, eZ Publish will be ready for use.

The "Installing eZ Publish on a Linux/UNIX based system" and "Installing eZ Publish on Windows" sections (depending on the target OS) will take you through the necessary steps.

      This error means that you were using PHP 4 instead of PHP 5, see http://issues.ez.no/11722

  • First run

    Hello,

    I've this error when I visit my site for the first run:

    Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 491520 bytes) in /home/noch/public_html/tango/lib/eztemplate/classes/eztemplatearrayoperator.php on line 767

    I don't know what's wrong, any idea ? My server is running under Linux with php5 installed.
    Thank you.
    • Re: First run

      Ok I fixed it ! You need to configure php by adding a line like this to the server’s php.ini file:

      memory_limit = 32M
  • Problem with ezpublish

    I have a small concern, When I connect on http: // localhost / ezpublish to configure it, I have that interrogation marks on the page. Somebody knows where from it comes?

    • Re: install - Error

      Hello,

      I am also receviing an error message.

      When I run the ezPublish 4.1.0 Setup Wizard I receive an error message on the Setup Wizard, The following message displays:

      Fatal error: eZ Publish did not finish its request
      The execution of eZ Publish was abruptly ended, the debug output is present below.

      How do I correct this problem?
      • Re: Re: install - Error

        Hi,

        The solution would be updating this line in php.ini file

        memory_limit = 16M

        to be if possible

        memory_limit = 64M

        But, this is mostly not possible in shared hosting environments since we don't have access to php.ini. I believe adding this line to config.php in the root folder would help

        ini_set('memory_limit', '64M');

        When I do this - the error above disappears but I am getting 500 Internal Server Error and have no clue how to solve it. It worked on my local box but it would not work on shared hosting. I think eZ cannot be used easily on such hostings :(

        • Re: Re: Re: install - Error

          Well, I apologize. It seems that install works and I am not even getting script timeout erros (that I expected). After I added that line above to config.php, I had to clear cache folder /var/cache and install worked.
          We'll see how eZ behaves on shared hosting. I will be an optimist :)
          • Re: Re: Re: Re: install - Error

            Well, I am keep on replying to myself. I might have gotten mad already, but it's so difficult to install eZ on shared hosting. No way scripts can be completed in 30 seconds, while eZ is creating database, imports templates, creates cache and storage files.
            Is there any tip how this can be solved?
            • Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: install - Error

              Talking to myself again - going insane, I know...
              I have found painful workaround for installing eZ on shared hosting. I have installed locally on my computer, again with few tries due to timeout and too much memory consuming. I created virtual host on local machine to be like the domain on shared hosting, added to hosts file and pointed to 127.0.0.1. So, I had on local box www.myezsite.net, installed it and then uploaded database content to the hosting, copied all eZ files (including var/cache and var/storage) via FTP and then site worked. There was ~ 60MB filed to be copied. This was slow, but it worked.
              Now, I am hoping I will not have script timeout issues when I start working with the site.
              • Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: install - Error

                ... and how is this ended?
                It's a solution but how would one work with updates etc. as thats not possible that way.
                I think I don't bother with it as it seems to me very time consuming, even with payed support.

  • all-in-one stack installer

    If you're not setting up a production environment, eZ has a couple of evaluation options which include Apache, Mysql, and PHP packaged together with eZ Publish. You can get the whole system with or without eZ Flow, for Windows or Mac:

    http://ez.no/download#evaluation1
    http://ez.no/download#evaluation2

  • problem with what to put in tghe htacces file.

    I get a message that says:

    Your site is not running in a virtual host mode, this is insecure. It is recommended to run eZ Publish in virtual host mode. If you do not have the possibility to use virtual host mode, you should follow the instructions below about how to install an .htaccess file. The .htaccess file tells the web server to restrict the access to certain files.

    If you have shell access, you can run the following commands.

    cd /hsphere/local/home/dante22e/givespamachance.com/spamville
    cp .htaccess_root .htaccess

    If you do not have shell access, you will have to copy the file using an FTP client or ask your hosting provider to do this for you.

    ------------------------------------------- I don't know what gto put in an htaccess file. I see the [dot]htaccess_root file.
